Combination Wheelchair - Walker
It is possible to get a hybrid wheelchair-walker covered by Medi-Cal, California's Medicaid program, but it is not a guarantee. As with all durable medical equipment (DME), a hybrid wheelchair-walker will only be covered if it is deemed medically necessary and is the lowest-cost option to meet your needs.
A hybrid wheelchair-walker is also referred to as a rollator-transport chair combo.
Coverage requirements
To be considered for coverage, you must meet the following criteria:
Medical necessity: You must have a medical condition that significantly impairs your mobility and affects your ability to perform daily activities, such as bathing, dressing, and moving around your home or community.
Prescription: A licensed healthcare provider, such as a doctor or physician's assistant, must prescribe the device and document why it is medically necessary for you.
Least costly alternative: Medi-Cal will only cover the lowest-cost equipment that still meets your medical needs. If a less expensive alternative, such as a standard walker, can effectively address your mobility issues, a hybrid device may be denied.
Prior authorization: Most DME, especially complex or expensive items, requires prior authorization from Medi-Cal before it is dispensed. Your DME supplier must submit a request with supporting medical documentation from your doctor.
The application process
See a healthcare provider. Your doctor will need to perform an in-person or telehealth examination to document your mobility limitations.
Get an evaluation. Your healthcare provider will refer you to a durable medical equipment (DME) supplier. A specialist from the supplier will conduct an evaluation, often in your home, to ensure the equipment fits your needs and living space.
Submit the request. The DME supplier will work with your doctor to submit a Treatment Authorization Request (TAR) to Medi-Cal, including a letter explaining why the hybrid device is medically necessary.
Receive approval. If the request is approved, the DME supplier will provide the equipment. If you are also covered by Medicare (a "dual eligible" member), Medi-Cal will act as the secondary payer and cover any costs not paid by Medicare.
