Chopstick Hacks

Image
Use them to stir while cooking. Use them as drink stirrers. (I found this idea on DIY Life.) Reuse as sticks for homemade Popsicles. (This one also came from DIY Life.) I use one to stir the slurry when making coffee in a French Press. Dry plastic bags on them. Stick them in a jar and hang the bags off of them. I did this when I lived on an off-the-grid property where we were very careful about trash, and also when I lived in a cooperative house. The coop actually had a piece of wood mounted to the kitchen wall with chopsticks sticking out of it for bags to dry on. There's green street cred right there. Use them to stack plates on when you run out of space in the dish drain. As in, you want to raise the dish you are drying off of the countertop. Level-off measured dry ingredients like flour when baking with a chopstick. My mom has done this forever. She also saves Popsicle sticks for this purpose. Toast marshmallows. (Idea found on This Old House.) Use them to clean hard-to-reach...

Rag Quilts A Rag Quilt is a quilt made with exposed seams that fray when laundered. A Rag Quilt is generally made with squares or strips and the seams are clipped at regular intervals to encourage fraying. Flannel is great for Rag Quilts as it will fray nicely. ... A rag quilt is a type of Quilt As You Go. Pictured, is a rag quilt on etsy.com & it's super cute. I think she used a larger seam allowance, than 1/2 inch, to cut and fray because the fluffiness is abundant; nonetheless, it's a winner for me. I loved making them, so easy, except I have such a hard time choosing colors and fabrics. A wonderful tutorial to use:  https://www.thesprucecrafts.com/learn-how-to-make-rag-quilt-2821902 ~~ Quillow aka Foot Pocket Quilt Quillows are a rather unique combination of the concepts of a quilt and a sleeping bag. Just as quilts are designed to offer warmth and protection from the cold, the quillow is also lined and filled to keep out the cooler weather. What makes the quill...

Chicken Soup and Colds

Chicken soup inhibits neutrophil chemotaxis in vitro B O Rennard 1, R F Ertl, G L Gossman, R A Robbins, S I Rennard PMID: 11035691 DOI: 10.1378/chest.118.4.1150 Abstract Chicken soup has long been regarded as a remedy for symptomatic upper respiratory tract infections. As it is likely that the clinical similarity of the diverse infectious processes that can result in "colds" is due to a shared inflammatory response, an effect of chicken soup in mitigating inflammation could account for its attested benefits. To evaluate this, a traditional chicken soup was tested for its ability to inhibit neutrophil migration using the standard Boyden blindwell chemotaxis chamber assay with zymosan-activated serum and fMet-Leu-Phe as chemoattractants. Chicken soup significantly inhibited neutrophil migration and did so in a concentration-dependent manner. The activity was present in a nonparticulate component of the chicken soup. All of the vegetables present in the soup and the chicken indi...

Here's a Chance To Be Kind

The other day, I was at the bus stop across the street from the post office and I saw a fireman go in with a package. I envisioned myself and others letting him go ahead. But, nope, he was in there for a while. My feelings are this: if you're somewhere, and a first responder, be it a Police officer or Fireman / Firewoman let them go ahead of you. How many times I've seen fire come in with their radios ... duh, in case they get a call. I was at a Starbucks several years ago and talked to some fire guys and I asked whilst they were in line, what happens if you get a call? We leave. Yes, there are apps, not everyone has them. These responders are on a short break, so let them go first, so they can order and enjoy what they before the next call. I almost forewent my bus and went over to the post office to see why people were making this man wait!! let them go ahead of you!! It's the right thing to do! Give them frontsies in line!!
